Steps to apply for a small business grant
Verizon works with small businesses in Michigan. We are a member of many statewide trade associations and organizations that work with small businesses (such as the Detroit Regional Chamber, Grand Rapids Chamber, Dearborn Chamber, The Right Place, MI Chamber, Automation Alley, Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance, MI Business Association Incubator). Verizon participates in many thought leadership events with this organization to share knowledge and resources with its members.
In 2021, we were awarded the Veterans Business Lab at Grand Valley State University. Veterans and/or military spouses have been working to start their own business for three months. MVE-Lab encourages participants to identify their clients, connect with others, and find the resources they need to run a profitable and successful startup. It ends with a presentation offering a $25,000 minimum cash. Guests included employers, consultants, and other professionals such as attorneys and entrepreneurs, including the president of the Verizon Veterans Employee Resource Group, who shared information about Verizon's support for small business owners and their experience as an entrepreneur.

In 2021, we are also partnering with Verizon's Pro Bono Program and the Metro Detroit Black Business Alliance Grand Partnership Program. This program complements and connects Metro Detroit Black Detroit's business to multiple sources of financing to ensure sustainable growth. If any of these companies require additional legal assistance or personal support, the Verizon Pro Bono Program team agrees to work directly with the companies to seek additional legal services.
Verizon Small Business digital entrepreneurs are ready to share their achievements in 2022
Finally, in September, Verizon announced its Digital Small Business Program. This online curriculum is designed to provide small businesses with tools designed to succeed in today's digital world. The program includes learning forms, professional training, peer-to-peer networking, and a market for tools and solutions. The free online resource is available to all small businesses in Michigan (and throughout the nation) and will be used by Verizon partners such as the Black Business Alliance program of the Black Business Alliance.
Digital planning aims to ensure that businesses have all the tools and resources they need to thrive in today's economy. The COVID-19 pandemic has created unexpected challenges for businesses and has accelerated the transition to a digital way of working. Over 75% of small businesses have changed their operations due to the crisis, and more than 50% of SMEs say their online interaction with customers has improved. For small businesses to remain competitive in the new economic environment, they must be flexible and adapt to changing consumer preferences.

Small businesses understand the importance of using digital tools in their day-to-day business, but find it difficult to implement meaningful digital transformation. According to data released by Morning Consult and Verizon in their September 2020 report, "More than two in five decision makers say their business can thrive through digital technology and rely on communications." At the same time, more than two-thirds of respondents agree that adding or switching to digital/online services is a challenge for their business. How can we bridge this gap? Companies need easy access - wherever they are - to unique learning and training resources to successfully implement digital strategies in their business and have the confidence to succeed in a post-pandemic future.

Home to many leading research organizations and institutions, along with a vibrant and culturally diverse business environment, Detroit's wealth base is comprised of many talented business owners. Detroit has approximately 50,000 small businesses owned by people of color, and the city is committed to ensuring residents have access to education and economic growth. According to the 2021 Detroit Ecosystem Index, Detroit has 23% of all startups in Michigan and has all the resources you need to start and grow a digital business. As Verizon seeks to connect BIPOC business owners across the country with this valuable resource and create better ways for businesses to thrive in the digital economy, we look to small business owners in the greater Detroit -- and Michigan -- area as our customer base. .
The Verizon Small Business Ready Program (basically BIPOC) was created by Small Business for Small Business. Jamiel Robinson, Executive Director of the Grand Rapids Area Black Business Association (GRABB), is a prominent voice on the Business Advisory Committee who helps shape its program and offerings. Many experts in the field lead content, interactive videos, and courses. In short, Metro Detroit entrepreneurs will be equipped with the necessary digital skills and knowledge - through select study topics, training events, and community groups - to move their business forward!
We generally know that small business owners are interested in learning more about finance, digital marketing, and efficiency. Our users tell us they get the most value from educational resources and hands-on interaction with experts - through one-on-one mentoring and group coaching. 58% of platform users are interested in connecting with finance professionals, and 64% of users on the platform are interested in connecting with sales professionals. Popular areas are capital gains opportunities, digital marketing and increasing your online presence. Business owners also prefer to be part of a community where they can learn from one another, with 52% of consumers wanting to connect with like-minded colleagues.
Verizon Small Business Digital Ready is designed to be an essential tool for BDOs, Small Business Development Centers, CDFI, and other organizations that help small businesses every day. We work with these types of organizations and work with them to incorporate our capabilities into their offerings. The Small Business Digital Initiatives section also provides opportunities for businesses to connect with other businesses and resources around town so they can connect with support in their area!

Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, Verizon laid the groundwork for small business-focused host community discussions in communities across the country. The purpose of this discussion is to hear about the amazing work small businesses and startups are doing today, the daily challenges and trends small businesses face, and to discuss how Verizon can help. you in the future. . Participants include small business owners, small business support groups, and trade unions.
Now more than ever, we at Verizon will continue to build meaningful relationships with the communities we serve. These discussions are the start of what we hope will be a long-term partnership in which we can continue to discuss and identify future support opportunities.
As the local liaison between Verizon and small business owners, I seek to build bridges with colleagues, internal business partners, and external stakeholders to advocate for policies that enrich lives and deliver future digital opportunities that serve all Michigan communities. I leverage relationships within Verizon and with support team partners to create partnerships to address the challenges small businesses face, drive success and best practices, and spread the word about Verizon's tools and resources. I meet with companies carefully to listen to their needs and learn how we can bring hope to our local communities and create new ways to connect that move the world forward for everyone.
